Vibing In The Streets with Navy DJ

Updated: May 1, 2020

With Varsity well under way now and everyone looking for new spots to hang and catch a vibe I have the perfect plug for someone who brings the vibes in the streets of Braamfontein. This time we catch up with Navy DJ who’s not only a final year B.Ed student at Wits but also dabbles in content creating as a part of Wang Film Production’s Ushela Kanjani Youtube series as well as DJ’ing at The Rock Pool Venue and Metanoia and occasionally at South Point events

Thabiso Maya A.K.A Navy DJ is a 22 year old Afro Tech/ Amapiano/ Deep House DJ from Dobsenville, Soweto who’s interest for DJ’ing started around 2014 when he caught himself intrigued from watching his brother’s friend do a sound check at one of the event’s he was performing at and from that day Navy found himself on Virtual DJ learning the tricks of the trade. Although it started as a hobby, he decided to take it a step further and started playing at gig near him and the positive responses he received led him to take it the next level and he started gigging more often.

Navy says his favourite thing about the DJ’ing is being able to introduce people to new sounds and songs because it reveals an opportunity for new interactions with the crowd and he loves being able to take his crowd on a musical journey and seeing how they react to his different mixes. The DJ who’s worked close with DJ Banze, Jeffy Pac and JustLu , also mentions that his music is greatly influenced by the likes of Black Coffee, Da Capo and Shimza and he enjoys learning from these artists well he aims to perfect his own craft.

If you want to catch more of Navy’s vibes you can catch him on Thursdays at The Rock Pool Venue, Fridays and Saturdays at Metanoia and on the 15th of February he’s at Uluju Lifestyle.
