Raspy: A Singing Sensation

Updated: Aug 13, 2021

Thandolwethu better known as Raspy is a RnB and Soul Artist, born in the small town Empangeni in KZN. She is well known for her breakout single which features Bigstar Johnson which was released in 2018. When you hear her enticing voice the reason behind her stage name becomes quite evident – she has quite the husky or hoarse voice, which just works perfectly for her sound.

Growing up, the songstress has always had a passion for singing and she had the voice for it hence she started sharing her singing and song writing talents at school competitions. Raspy has always had a liking to Jazz and classical music, her love for music was undeniable but she never thought she would make a career out of it and when asked what she would be if not a singer she instantly replied “a chef, I’ve been told quite a few times that I am a great cook".

Five fun facts about Raspy:

  1. She is the eldest from her mother's side

  2. She loves soccer

  3. She only started taking her music seriously in 2018

  4. She is a hopeless romantic

  5. All her relationships have failed

Raspy now brings us her debut EP ‘Heart Crisis' which is a musical experience that is sure to take you on an emotional ride. Her experience with love and dating including all the stages of it all is what make EP such a relatable body of work. The 7 track EP also features Blxckie and Bigstar Johnson. What she would like people to take from her music is that it is okay to be vulnerable, heartbreak and loss are a part of life.

Amongst the artist that she’s already worked with, including her recent feature on ‘Kumnandi' by Lebza The Villain featuring herself, DBN GOGO and Musa Keys, the singer also sees herself working with the likes of Shekinah, Tshego, Burna Boy and Miguel to name a few.

If you’re an aspiring singer or artist Raspy wants you to know that through the process you should trust yourself, stay true to yourself and be confident. “It is so hard to screw over a woman who is focused and trusts their music. And no matter what people tell you, you don’t have to do any form of exchange for you to be out there. Just be talented and put yourself out there.”

It’s Friday the 13th and if anything goes wrong today, your decision to listen to 'Heart Crisis' won’t be one of them! Stream or download the EP here: Heart Crisis
