Behind the Lens: The Wang Film Productions Story

Wang Film Production is a production house that has been around the block for 2 years now. The production house was founded by Emmanuel Zane Mhlanga, better known as Wang Zane, who describes himself as a creative who suffered from trying hard to come out with perfect content to a point that it always gave him anxiety and he never trusted his work but has grown from all that to a young man who stays positive and believes in his work. The 22 year old who has been in the creative industry since he was a teen reckons his love for content creation was inevitable, especially cause he grew up in a family where everyone was/is a creative – his brother being a DJ, his uncle in the fashion industry and his cousins who could dance, which all sparked his wild imagination. Zane started out in the music industry in the Far East Rand, where he shared a bit of his life story through rap, as a means to cope with all that he has been through; in his music career he has established connections and worked closely with some of the biggest artists in the east rand. He also had 2 clothing brands which were well known in the East Rand and led to him being inducted in the 2014 “Young Entrepreneurs to watch”. Zane says that he has always believed in creating, though he only recently took it seriously and it has put him in a position that he doesn’t want to come down from.

Some of the east’s best videos have come from the work of Wang Film Productions, such as Eeque Da Dreema’s ‘

’ which won the Ekurhuleni Hip Hop Awards’ Music video of the year award, which he says was the first ever music video he put out with no budget, an entry level camera and a one man crew; “[The video] took 5 months to edit because I had doubts but it came out clean and I’ve since massively improved after that”. Zane also worked on the music video for Rey 4Ohz‘s ‘

’ and Eeque Da Dreama ft. Kid X ‘

’, which was shot in Kwa- Thema, Springs.

Wang Zane also has a short film,

, which was for his graduation film which set the bar as his first directorial debut, which he says came with a lot of pressure and learning curves “Taking 5 hours to shoot a 3 minute scene and realizing while editing that there’s angles missing so we went back and shot those angles while keeping continuity in mind.”, even though he was shattered that the film wasn’t nominated at the school's festival, the response to the film still kept him going.

The student Youtube series, uShela Kanjan, which took the YouTube scene by storm by the end of the first season, was conceptualized after Zane turned down a bet with the guys he was working with at AfroPunk, where they offered him R1000 to go greet his 'future wife' because he didn’t know how to start the conversation with her. “There was already 3 shows in the pipeline for Wang Film Productions and I needed a 4th one to complete my content plan and I ended cutting 2 shows to add “u’Shela Kanjan” and carried on with “ The Cover Show ”. Two weeks into planning the show, doing the logo, finding the right song [which was produced by Rey 40hz] and perfect cast, the show was finally ready for the world.”. Zane confesses that season 2 was only supposed to air in 2020, but after season 1, the viewers bullied him into dropping season 2 just a week after season 1 had ended. Mpho Ntsana, the producer of uShela Kanjan and the new upcoming show, Runaway Girl, who Zane recognises as one of the people who have been around since day 1, says she’s been having fun producing the show, and although there are ups and downs, the main thing for her is that people enjoy the show. For Navy, one of the viewers most loved cast member, the Youtube scene seemed a bit far fetched at first mainly because he thought it would entail having a lifestyle vlog or being about makeup, that led to a whole lot of skepticism when Zane initially proposed the idea to them, but once they shot their first episode they never looked back, especially after seeing the amount of views, subscribers and how people generally loved the show. “From time to time , I’d bump into people who watch the show and recognize me and they would greet me and give compliments and tell me that we have the best YouTube show in Braamfontein and I’m their favorite”, says the DJ. Kenny's favourite episodes were

and

which was about defining friends because they clarified a lot of petty things that go on in friendship and what they mean for example “you could ask someone to bring a friend and they bring your ex.” , which is some shady business, I must say. Season 3 will air early 2020 and it is dedicated to first year varsity students, to give them something they can watch and learn from while being entertained. Although Zane says it's going to be a short season, Kgabo promises a lot of crazy content and entertaining episodes. So, if you haven’t caught onto the wave, you still have time to catch up on the first 2 seasons, before the 3rd one drops. Click
